IDCMP is the mechanism by which Intuition delivers user-interface events to applications. Rather than polling for input, an Amiga application **sleeps** — consuming zero CPU — until Intuition sends a message saying "the user clicked a button" or "the window was resized."
IDCMP is built on top of Exec's standard **message passing** system. This means it is:
- **Asynchronous** — events queue up; the application processes them at its own pace
- **Zero-cost idle** — `Wait()` suspends the task completely; no busy-looping
- **Type-safe** — each message carries a class, code, qualifier, and optional address
- **Cooperative** — the application must `ReplyMsg()` every message to release it back to Intuition
This design is fundamental to why AmigaOS could multitask smoothly on a 7 MHz 68000 with 512 KB of RAM.

### Message Reply Latency
Intuition allocates message blocks from system memory. If your application processes slowly and doesn't reply:
1. Messages accumulate in the port — each one ~40 bytes
